As we start June, it might feel hard for you to be facing a new month without them.
Yesterday I celebrated my cat Salem’s birthday and it was a lovely day. There was, however, something important missing, his brother and my boy, Binx. I miss him every day and the pet grief is always there. Special occasions can be harder, but as much as I’d give anything to have another moment with him, there were lots of smiles. I thought of our memories and the life we shared together. I included him in our celebrations.
I was reminded of questions I get asked all the time by clients, will my heart always be broken? Will I always miss them?
I know your heart is broken right now and you are missing your beloved animal more than you can describe. I know the ache in your soul is heavy and your grief is painful and many people just don’t understand. It probably feels like it will always be this way for you.
It’s different for everyone and your grief and healing journey is unique. Your heart will likely always feel the breakage but it will slowly start to piece back together. I like to think of it as Kintsugi, the Japanese art of fixing a broken bowl / cup with gold, leaving the cracks visible and making them a thing of beauty. Instead of gold repairing the cracks, love acts as the glue for your heart.
The ache of the loss starts to ease and the love you felt for each other becomes the strongest emotion.
You will always miss them and you may still cry years, even decades later, but your thoughts become more focused on the memories and times you shared together, rather than the rawness of their death.
If you have lost your animal, I am so sorry for your loss. I want you to know that your grief is real and valid and you are not alone.
I’m here to support you at this horrible time. If you’d like to explore this further, you can book a session here.
